Dr. Arnold Penther

Son of Daniel PENTHER, painter and conservator at the academies of applied arts in Vienna, Munich, Paris and Rome. A. PENTHER was educated at Bielitz, Czech Rep. and Seitenstetten, Austria and got his Ph.D. in zoology at the university in Vienna 1892. From 1898 until his retirement in 1924 he worked mainly as arachnologist at the natural history museum in Vienna.
Collecting expeditions led him to S Africa 1894/96, the Erdschias-Dagh 1902, Asia Minor, Mesopotamia 1910 and the Balkan peninsular1914, 1916, 1918. 232 bird skins from S Africa were donated to the Natural history museum in Vienna in 1898. Arthropodes and molluscs also are incorporated in the NMW. Plants collected in S-Africa, Natal and Rhodesia 1894/95 came to the herbaria in Vienna and BOL. His name is commemorated in plant taxa.
