LANO spent his early life on a farm and later studied pharmacy in Minneapolis and Milwaukee. He went into business in several towns in Minnesota and removed to Fayetteville in September 1912. From early life he was deeply interested in birds and formed a large and valuable collection which he gave to the University of Minnesota when he left the state. Specimens also found their way to the collection of the Zoological Museum of the Michigan University. He was known to ornithologists all over the country with whom he corresponded and exchanged specimens. Since 1917 (and 1890-1905) he was an Associate of the American Ornithologists’ Union and published a few notes in “The Auk“ and other journals. In Fayetteville LANO took an active interest in nature study in the schools and gave many lectures on birds, being known as “the bird man“. He was also a member of the Masonic and Eastern Star lodges for over forty years. A. LANO was married to Miss Ida HARRISON with whom he had three daughters. He died after an illness having been stricken with heart trouble.
