Prof. Dr. Benedikt Dybowski

DYBOWSKI studied medicine and natural sciences in Tartu (1851-1857), Breslau (1857/58) and Berlin (1858-1860). In 1860 he finished his thesis in Warsaw and studied the Baltic fish fauna. 1862 he became Prof. Adjunct for zoology at the university of Warsaw. As a consequence of having participated at the Polish January rebellion in 1863 he was banned to exile in Siberia (1864-1876). Staying in Irkutsk and Tschita he studied and collected the fauna of lake Baikal, the Ussuri and Amur regions, the Japanese sea and Kamtschatka. After his rehabilitation he stayed at Kamchatka and returned to Poland in 1877. 1878 he went to Siberia again working as a medicin on the Kamtschakta peninsular where he continued his zoogeographical studies. There he initiated the acclimatization of reindeer on Bering island. 1883 until 1906 he worked as professor of zoology in Lviv, Lemberg. Altogether he spent 17 years in Siberia, Transbaikalia, Dauria, in the Amur- and Ussuri region, around Wladiwostok, on Askold island and in Kamchatka. The main part of his collection went to TACZANOWSKI in Warsaw. A number of bird taxa commemorate his name.
