Carlo Victor Heinrich, Freiherr von Erlanger

ERLANGER was born into a wealthy family. His parents were Wilhelm von ERLANGER (1834-1909) and Caroline von ERLANGER (born BERNUS) (1843-1918) who moved from Frankfurt to Ingelheim in 1859. Especially his mother supported his interest in natural history. He remembered her in a species described by him (Galerida theklae carolinae). ERLANGER attended school at Frankfurt and Darmstadt and was taught ornithology by Ch. DEICHLER and C. HILGERT. He also had contacts to O. KLEINSCHMIDT. For his studies he stayed at Lausanne (since 1891), Cambridge, London, Paris and Berlin. 1895 he studied Arab and Suaheli languages in Berlin. He travelled and collected intensively in Iceland (1895), Lundi Island, GB (1896), Tunisia (together with P. SPATZ 1892, 1896/97), in Ethiopia, Somaliland (1899-1901 with C. HILGERT and O. NEUMANN). His scientific collection comprised 12.589 skins and 1140 clutches and came to „Senckenbergische Naturforschende Gesellschaft in Frankfurt in 1917. His private zoological collection was donated by his mother to the museum in Ingelheim. Entomological specimens found their way to Berlin, Tring and Hamburg. In 1904 he died after a car accident.
