Ferdinand Schwanda

Ferdinand Schwanda

In 1905 F. SCHWANDA established himself in Maranhao, Brazil, and soon started sending bird skins to Europe. He first collected at Sao Luiz, Boa Vista and Primeira Cruz and later moved farther east to Miritiba, halfway between the Rio Itapicurá and the frontier of Piauhy. Although no account of his collections, scattered though various museums in Europe and America, has ever been published, it appears that his researches were exclusively restricted to the coast region of Maranhao. He continued collecting until his death around 1910.
The Natural History Museum Vienna holds 63 skins from Miritiba, Brazil. The collection SCHWANDA came to NMW via STEINDACHNER in 1910.
