William Frederick Henry Rosenberg

ROSENBERG’s first expedition was to Colombia in 1894 where he collected insects and birds. His small bird collection was acquired by BOUCARD. 1896 he proceeded to Ecuador and later to Colombia collecting especially for ROTHSCHILD. From 1898 until 1899 he employed collectors (G. FLEMMING, R. MIKETTA) there who provided him with skins. Duplicates went to the British Museum but the complete set ist to be found in the Rotschild collection. He started his business as natural history dealer in Tring 1897 and moved to London 1898, where his address was 57 Haverstock Hill. The British museum purchased specimens which Rosenberg had received from Perry O. SIMONS (Ecuador, Peru), SCHRADER (NE Africa), KOSSLOWSKY (Patagonia), H. KÜHN (Moluccas), ANDRÉ and BODDINGTON (Venezuela), G.L. BATES (Cameroon). Most of the species new to science were subsequently described by HARTERT (SHARPE 1906). Skins went also to the Liverpool museum (ex coll. BARROW). The archives of The Natural History Museum, Tring, holds correspondence of ROSENBERG with different zoological departments between 1897 and 1918 as well as with ROTHSCHILD (1895-1900) especially from Ecuador.
